My approach

I bring my same curiosity, enthusiasm for transformation, and reverence for human creativity to my work with writing clients and therapy patients. Each writing collaboration offers an opportunity for clients to transform a specific project while building domain general writing skills and expanding their capacity for self-expression.

I have fifteen years of experience as a writing tutor, editor and writing project consultant. I began tutoring as an undergraduate at Stanford’s Hume Writing Center and I am a winner of the Stanford Undergraduate Creative Nonfiction Award.

I help students and professionals in the following areas:

  • Creative Writing Projects

  • Writing Skill Development

  • Editorials and Advocacy Pieces

Testimonials

“When I was writing a research grant proposal, Nina helped me refine my writing with care and clarity. She was able to help me view the piece as a whole, she quickly understood the needs and objectives the proposal needed to meet to be successful, and with her guidance the work went from being a document that answered the necessary questions to a persuasive explanation of the value of the research to be done. Plus, she's a joy to be around. Editing my own writing has never been so fun.”

Miranda Strominger, Stanford University, 2015

Amber Todd, Oakland Pride Co-Chair

“I could not more strongly praise Nina as a truly phenomenal writing tutor, and would absolutely recommend her to anyone who wishes to improve their writing abilities. Nina supported me as I drafted my personal statement for graduate school applications. Rather than promoting a formulaic method of good writing, she took great efforts to develop my own writing style, which improved my personal statement, and added to my own toolkit of writing knowledge that has continued to serve me throughout graduate school.”

Janani Ramachandran, JD, Oakland City Council Member

“Nina Foushee is an enthusiastic, engaged, and skilled writing tutor and coach. Nina worked as a writing tutor for three years in the Stanford University Hume Writing Center from 2012-2015. In that time, Nina worked with undergraduate and graduate students on academic essays and research papers across the disciplines, and on personal statements and fellowship application materials. Nina’s strengths as a tutor lie in her ability to explain complex writing concepts intelligently and clearly to writers, her on-the-spot problem solving, and her talent with helping students build their skills and confidence in writing.”
